Sažetak
This paper is an empirical, corpus-based investigation of the role modal auxiliaries play in the realization of face-threatening acts (Brown and Levinson 1987). In particular, it examines how the use of modals varies in native versus non-native English and Dutch business writing styles. Since the use of modals has been shown to be an integral part of performing politeness strategies in language, any differences found can give an insight into why cross-communication problems in language occur.
