Sažetak
Reconfigurable manufacturing system is a new paradigm that attempts to link market demands and manufacturing systems by increasing flexibility of the system configurations. Variety can be defined as the differences among the outputs of a reconfigurable manufacturing system, i.e. product types. Product variety is an essential factor to consider in evaluating manufacturing systems. A manufacturing system that can produce a wider range of products can be recognized as a more configurable system than a manufacturing system with a single product and/or with more limited product families. For instance, assuming both systems A and B can produce a number of product types grouped into families, it is right to say that system A is more configurable than system B, if system A deals with two product families while system B deals with a single family. To fulfil this need a concept of Bionic Assembly System (BAS), was proposed by Katalinic [2]. The concept of the system was developed on a real industrial demand to significantly reduce the production costs of electrical motors in mass production. Bionic Assembly System is based on concepts of autonomy, co-operation and intelligence. In recent years, reconfigurability of production systems has been in great demand.
