Sažetak
The population of Zagreb, the capital of the Republic of Croatia, is over one million, almost a quarter of the entire population of Croatia. Further expansion, in terms of population, industry and transportation, is in progress. Mt Medvednica, which because of its natural importance has the status of nature park, is part of the wider area of the city. The ever greater, largely negative, influences of the urban zone on this region make its protection, planned development and valorisation more and more topical to a large circle of government and non-government organisations. In order to construct a data infrastructure requisite for correct decision making, development and valorisation, and for the management of the Nature Park, an all-inclusive and multidisciplinary GIS model is in the process of being developed. Basic emphasis is placed on the protection of biological diversity (population, species and habitats), on current and future anthropogenic effects on this, and on the scientific aspects of the dependence of the distribution of biological diversity on the abiotic factors of the environment. A number of important popular, professional and economic results are spin-offs of the project. For the purpose, a GIS model has been developed that contains more than 20 layers of various kinds of information related to the data base.
