Sažetak
The aim of this study was to monitor iron accumulation in carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) liver under conditions of chronic exposure to low waterborne iron concentrations. Carp were held for 70 days in aquaria with constant iron concentration (1 mg/L) in the form of iron-gluconate. Perl´s reaction was used to detect iron in the liver tissue. Iron depositions were analyzed by light microscope and thereafter also by image analyser (LUCIA G 4.81) by which the surface of iron depositions were measured. Iron started to accumulate in the liver tissue on the 14th day of treatment and was located in the sinusoidal endothelium as mildly diffuse reaction. Much less was found in the cytoplasm of hepatocytes in the form of grain and diffuse reaction. Following the 35th day of treatment iron was also accumulated in macrophages. Continued treatment increased the quantity of iron depositions in liver tissue. The results indicate that long-term exposure of carp to low iron concentrations of iron-gluconate causes significant accumulation (p<0, 05) of this metal in the carp liver.
