Sažetak
Animal waste is created daily in slaughterhouses and meat processing industries throughout Croatia as a byproduct of human food industries, and is catered as such in utilization drives. Technology of the existing drives thermally recycles collected amounts of animal by-products and reduces it to 25% as solid part or meat and bone meal and as 15% liquid part of animal fats. However, with the appearance of bovine spongiform encephalopathy the usage of meat and bone meal has been prohibited in animal food and method of incineration is the proper method for catering animal by- products. Animal fats are used as renewable source of energy as energy generating product, in chemical industry and in production of animal food. Since a part of second and entire third category of slaughterhouse waste is suitable for production of biogas, this paper will place accent on the first category of animal waste and alkali hydrolysis as method used for its proper recycling. In alkaline hydrolysis slaughterhouse waste is mixed with alkali NaOH/KOH and is continuously boiled for 3 -6 hours at the temperature of 150°C and pressure of 4 Bars. Chemical bonds of the large protein molecules, nucleic acids (DNA and RNA), lipids, viruses and prions are braking into smaller molecules which react with NaOH/KOH and form Na/K- salts, and fatty acids form soaps with alkalis. The resulting chemical compound is a neutral or partially alkaline solution of organic substances suitable for anaerobe microbiological decomposition, then a valuable raw material for anaerobe digestion or KOH as a good fertilizer.
