Sažetak
A general account of air quality in Croatia, including emission of pollutants due to the road traffic and other sources of poluttion , is presented in the paper. Measures for air pollution abatement are discussed taking into account current trends in Western European countries. The level of road traffic emmisions in Croatia is defined on the basis of a known vehicle structure and kilometres travelled according to individual driving regimens (motorway, city, other roads) by using the emission factors contained in the COPERT program developed by the European Union. Using Croatias capital, Zagreb, as an example, an account is given on the traffic influence on the ground-level concetration of pollutants. In addition, the risk from traffic generated pollution, as compared with other stationary sources of poluttion, is presented. Ground- level concetrations for the city of Zagreb are calculated using climatological dispersion model LONGZ (UNAMAP5) while the detailed bottom-up approach is used to obtain emission data. Rasults gained in this survey show that the influence of traffic on ground-level concetrations in Zagreb is 38% and as much as 39% in the population dose (SO2+ NOx+ particles), whichcan also be adopted as a representative figure for other large cities in Croatia. Measures to be undertaken in the traffic sector over the next 10- year period to meet strategic objectives of air quality improvement in Croatia are discussed.
