Sažetak
The aim of this in vitro study was to examine whether saliva and pH of amine fluoride solution have any effects on the amount of calcium fluoride formed on the sound enamel surface after application of amine fluoride solution. Twenty freshly extracted human third molars were provided by oral surgeons. Four enamel slabs were prepared from10 teeth and selected at random into 4 groups according to one of the adjusted pH of amine fluoride solution: Group A (pH 5.3), Group B (pH 4.5) and Group C (pH 4.0). One slab of each tooth served as an untreated control (D). The slabs of three groups were shaken for 3 min. in amine fluoride solutions with 1% F on three successive days. These procedures were repeated with the slabs of the remaining 10 teeth, but each slab before treatment was immersed in fresh unstimulated saliva for 5 min. A statistically significant increase in the amount of calcium fluoride was observed between groups with the highest and the lowest pH values, regardless of whether saliva was present or not. The saliva pre-treatment in groups with two higher pH values increased the amounts of calcium fluoride. These data suggest that saliva could enhance the amount of calcium fluoride if the topical preparations are not highly acid. Acid solutions presumably increase availability of calcium through enamel dissolution and the presence of saliva through its calcium content. The higher calcium concentrations in saliva could correlate with better dental health.
