Sažetak
This paper is based on empirical research conducted in 2000 with a representative sample of the population who live in the inner city of Zagreb. The inner city in Zagreb includes the historical districts called Upper Town and Down Town. The aim of this research was to show their experiences of both town and neighbourhood. In the introduction, the paper gives a short review of the socio-demographic characteristic of the residents of the inner city. In an empirical survey, participants evaluated the social conditions and quality of life in their specific neighbourhood area such as the historical city centre. The paper investigates the need to rehabilitate and revitalize the city centre and, to also improve life conditions. There is emphasis on the importance of social relations in the process of urban planning, especially to take inhabitants perspective into account. Namely, their experiences and participation in everyday life affirm them as important social partners in the rehabilitation of the local community. In addition, the social role and relevance of public communication in the assessment of vital problems concerning the historical district in the period of transition are emphasized.
