Sažetak
It is often impossible to control the occurrence of requests that are generated at random either regarding quantity or the duration of processing. The limited capacity or random appearance of customers and the duration of their processing result in queues. In railway traffic these queues are a frequent phenomenon at ticket counters where passengers buy tickets, at the merchandise counters when contracting transport, in case of wagons waiting to be processed at the acceptance yard, waiting of locomotives to be inspected and catered, waiting of wagons for loading or unloading, etc. The analysis of queuing and the definition of their characteristics are the subject of a science that is called the queuing theory. It allows the application of mathematical models for the assessment of requests and processes that have the queuing character and the basic goal is to develop mathematical methods that will describe the basic characteristics of the queuing process in order to evaluate the quality of the system operation. In determining the throughput capacity of the railway lines by means of the queuing theory, the starting assumption is that the input flow of customers consists of trains that arrive to a considered section, the queue consists of trains that cannot be let through to pass a limiting section of the line without waiting, the limiting distance consists of the service channel, and the output flow of customers consists of trains that depart from the considered line section. Concrete analysis will be used to apply the theoretical assumptions mentioned here on the calculation of the throughput capacity of railway lines as the measuring parameter of quality in comparing different variants.
