Sažetak
The Cathedral of St James in Šibenik (1431-1536) is the most important architectural monument of the 15th and 16th centuries in Croatia, and a distinctive accomplishment of the European architecture. Its unique barrel vault and roof construction, entirely made of stone, which "organically" ends in the form of “ trefoil’ façade, has been the subject of scientific study for a long time, primarily as a possible origin of this, so called "Venetian type" of façade in the Adriatic region. The paper will explain the possible reasons which led to this "anomaly" (i.e. building the church entirely of stone without any wood), analyzing the “ apotrophic” iconographic program of the sanctuary through the concretization of the historical and political picture of the area at the moment of the immediate Turkish threat, coinciding with the beginning of a new building phase (1475-1477). The paper will also discuss new and important role of St Mark, as the patron saint of Venetian Republic, through the specific relationship between the Šibenik commune and Venice, during the 100-year process of the building of the cathedral.
