Sažetak
Croatian music historiography is marked at its beginnings by the efforts of Franjo Ks. Kuhač (1834-1911) and, a little later, Vjenceslav Novak (1859-1905) and Vjekoslav Klaić (1849-1928). Kuhač's essays on various historical topics and his lexicographical works - unfortunately unfinished - are certainly the most significant contribution to the development of Croatian music historiography in the 19th century. However, Kuhač's conviction that music and its historiography must endorse and promote national identity sometimes impeached his scholarly objectivity in the interpretation of certain historical facts, and even lead him to arbitrary and scholarly unsupported conclusions. Like Kuhač, Vjekoslav Klaić promoted the idea of introducing music theory and history into the curriculum of Zagreb University. These subjects were meant to be taught to students enrolled in the initial years of various departments with other general subjects. Klaić focused his scholarly interest mainy on the period of the Croatian National Movement of the 1830s and 1840s, but his broad interests and historical knowledge also resulted in his 1892 essay on Georgius Crisanius (Juraj Križanić) and his treatise Asserta musicalia, which was the first large-scale essay about this 17th-century Croatian music theorist. Vjenceslav Novak was not a researcher himself. He was primarily a pedagogue and, therefore, his works intended for teaching were based mainly on secondary sources. Still, they reveal the impressive scope of Novak's knowledge, which was particularly manifested in his general survey of music history (written during the 1890s), which is the first synthesis of music history written in the Croatian language. An appendix to the essay includes a list of sources relevant to 19th-century Croatian music historiography.
