Sažetak
The interest for natural fibers in non – textile applications has increased as a result of the search for new renewable materials. Apart from traditional textile use, fibers are rapidly becoming ingredients of new composite materials utilized in automobile and construction industry. Especially attractive for environmental safety demands are biodegradable and renewable biocomposities reinforced with the flax fibers. One of the few disadvantages of flax fibers is sensitivity to microorganisms. It is well known that natural fibers are liable to damage by microorganisms, which is especially the case at cellulose fibers like cotton, flax, hemp or protein fibers as wool and silk. The impact of microorganisms leads to irreversible damage and even degradation of the fibers. In anaerobic conditions, cellulose fibers are most often attacked by fungi, while protein fibers are a nutritious base for bacterial. Heat, increased moisture as well as long lasting exposure of textiles to environments without flow air are conditions favorable for the microorganism development. This paper presents the investigation the influence of ultrasound treatment on the technical flax fibers resistance to microorganisms. For the purpose of those investigations, ultrasound treatment was performed in various conditions (temperature, time and media). Resistance to microorganisms was determined according the standardized methods (EN ISO 12225:2000, EN ISO 11721:2001, DIN 53933:1992) adjusted to the investigation of fibers. The efficiency of the treatment was determined by comparison of properties sample which were exposed to activity of microorganisms with those of ones unexposed. The properties compared were the degree of polymerization and technological properties (finesse, tenacity). A microscopic analysis of the fiber surface was also compared.
