Sažetak
The paper discusses a recent Bosnian production of Shakespeare's Hamlet, where the play is set at the Ottoman court and, the director claims, only slightly adapted in order to conform to a different political, cultural and theological context. The production is interesting and important in local terms because it brings together actors and theatre practitioners from different ex-Yugoslav republics. In more global terms, this Muslim Hamlet is significant because it very consciously responds to the contemporary political concerns and anxieties characterising the relationship between the West and the East. I propose to look at the problems which this particular production encounters, placing it in the context of the recent uses of Shakespeare's Hamlet in Bosnia while paying special attention to the broader issues of appropriation, historicism and orientalism.
