Sažetak
Specific objectives to be achieved by Partner No.3 were directed to investigation of human influence to the area of Plitvice Lakes National Park, which was chosen as one of the case studies (tourist domain) performed during this Project (WP6). Since the whole area, because of the karst geological structure, is very sensitive to any source of pollution, the authorities of the National Park, inscribed 1979 on the UNESCO World Heritage List, are concerned about the future of this attractive area. Although this region was spared from the war activities 1991-1995, in the last decade the steady increase of tourist activities and dense traffic connecting interior of Croatia with its littoral represent a hazard to the water and natural ecosystem. The influence of anthropogenic activities threatens the natural process of formation of tufa (freshwater calcite) forming the barriers (cascades) which dam the lakes, which represents a unique natural phenomenon of enormous tourist potential. Also, in the last decades the process of eutrophication in some of the lakes was developed and it is in progress. It becomes a threat not only to the aesthetic of the lakes, but also to tufa formation process. The main aim of our investigations was to identify the sources of eutrophication process to see whether it is a consequence of anthropogenic pollution or a natural process and to propose measures of its reduction. The same phenomenon of tufa formation occurs also in some parts of the Una River near town Bihać, which — together with its surroundings — suffered much during the war. The investigations of human influence on this particular area have been performed within the case study on urban and industrial domain (WP7, WP8). Together with Partner No.6 our group participated in investigations in the Una River ecosystem. Results of parallel measurements carried out in both areas are described in the Consolidated Report.
