This paper discusses the potential for using social software such as weblogs, wikis, and social bookmarks in the design of e-learning activities. Each of these technologies is briefly outlined in this paper and analyzed in the context of instructional design in e-learning. Furthermore, the results of a survey are presented regarding the use of various internet-based communication tools and social software among college students, as well as the evaluation of the potential for using social software in academic education.
