Sažetak
Groundwater from karst aquifers is among the most important resources of drinking water supply of the worldwide population. In Croatia carbonate terrains occupy 50% of the land surface, karst water contributes 50% to the total drinking water supply. Pollution from domestic, agricultural and industrial sources is increasing, either directly through discharges (effluent) or indirectly from the spreading of fertilizers or through leaching from landfill. In the last couple of years several hundred kilometres of highways have been built in Croatia and numerous sections are still under construction or in the planning phase. On the other hand there are very few exact data on the efficiency of the expected protective measures, especially in the domain of underground waters protection. Furthermore, the systems of controlling and maintaining the constructed drainage systems, procedures in case of an accident and monitoring possible negative influences are poorly developed. In that situation, Croatian partners in KATER II project have taken over the task to make a system of monitoring the influence of the highway on environment and primarily in relations to underground waters in karstic areas.
