Sažetak
Various kinds of reintegration and prospects of activities were observed in patients with spinal cord injuries (SCI) in those patients who were injure while being in military service (wounded during the war in Croatia) in comparison with those who suffered injury as civilians. Objective: In his report we will exhibit the quality of life among the patients 5-10 years after the SCI making comparison between the group of civil and military (war) patients focusig on medical and social aspects of reintegration. Methods: In 50 patients with SCI lasting durign the period from 5 to 10 years, we have carried out a poll from September to December 2003, and the questions were about the injury level, neurological deficiency, sphincter control, the modes of injuring (war injury/in peacetime), length of hospitalization after the injury, marital status, qualifications before and after getting injured, medical complications which are making everyday activities more distressing (EAD), change of vocation after injuring, present mobility, living in the city/outside, working activity - modes of earning, independence in everyday activities, taking part in sport activities, travel and the modes of using traffic means, taking part in public and social life, reintegration into work place setting and hobbies. Data were subjected to statistical analysis according to the existing methods. Patients filled in the questionnare voluntarily and anonymously. Outcome: 25 patients with spinal cord injury have been injured as civilians, and 25 have war injuries. The observed group comprises of 19 women and 40 men between 20 to 50 years of age. 10 patients were with tetraplegia, and 49 with paraplegia. Neurologically, 70% had complete injury (American Spinal Injury Association) ASIA A, and 30% incomplete with partially preserved senses, 20% of them work additionally although they do not depend upon that additional earnings. 4% out of total number of injured persons with permanent residency equally including patients injured in war and in peacetime, and the third percentage of all the interviewed persons live with their partner. The patients with spinal cord injury who were wounded while being in the military sevice spent more time on medical treatment than the patients who suffered injury as civilians. Conclusion: The result of change of vocation after injury was not getting a job, mostly because of unadaptable elements in working environment, that is prevailing in group of patients with civil injuries. There was a tendency for retirement among persons injured in war. The integration into working environment among the interviewed patients, if we compare it to other countries, is still not on the required level in both groups. Detailed descriptive statistics will be presented in this report.
