Sažetak
Although the existing literature explores the financial market – economic growth relationship in transition countries, in particular in Central and Eastern European countries and EU accession/candidate countries, there is a relative lack of the empirical analysis for the South Eastern European countries (SEEC). In this paper, we analyze the banking sector efficiency – economic growth relationship using a panel data analysis of 7 SEEC countries during the period 1994-2003. We concentrate our analysis on the banking sector, since other segments of the financial market are underdeveloped in our sample of the countries. We measure the qualitative development in the banking sectors using the margin between lending and deposit interest rates. Our second variable for the level of financial sector development is the amount of bank credits allocated to the private sector as a share of GDP. We apply panel data analysis in order to compensate for the lack of longer time series data, and to detect common patterns in the analyzed group of countries. The results indicate that the increase in the banking sector efficiency, measured by the interest rate spread, could have positive influence on the economic growth in selected countries.
