Sažetak
The main impact of fish farming is related to the intensive biodeposition of the faeces and unconsumed food that modify the environmental characteristics of the benthic habitats and affect benthic communities. In order to assess the impact of intensive fish farming in Limski kanal bay, meiofauna and nematode assemblages structure were studied at seven sites: five underlying the fish farms, one in the farm vicinity (20 meters from the farm edge), and referent site at 1 km distance from the farming area. All sites characterized by similar depths (20-31 m) and clayey-silt sediment type, with 95-99% silt and clay fraction. Samples were collected in two contrastive periods related feeding rate and biodeposition – the summer season when the impact would be at the maximum level, and the winter season when that impact would be at the minimum level. At all sites meiofaunal assemblages dominated by nematodes, but differ in taxonomic composition and richness, as well as in diversity of nematode species. Statistical analyses pointed out significant differences in meio- and nematode assemblages structure between impacted sites and reference site. The results suggested a localized environmental impact that is restricted to the farming area.
