Sažetak
Morphological, neurohistological and neurochemical studies were the first to show multiple asymmetries in the shape and structure of the brain. Most of these asymmetries are related to language functions. It is now clear that the greatest asymmetries of the brain structure are localized to the perisylvian language areas. Recent neuroanatomical studies have, among other regions, revealed asymmetries in the entorhinal cortex and subputaminal nucleus, possibly also in relation to language. These findings have implications for both normal and altered brain function. The degree to which functional asymmetries parallel those observed anatomically still have to be fully described. It is believed that the integration of data from all of the available approaches (such as genetic databases, studies of molecular mechanisms and functional brain imaging) will eventually provide a clearer understanding of the mechanisms of brain lateralization.
