Sažetak
What characterizes Contemporary Croatian society is marked social stratification, that is, it contains characteristics of traditional, modern and postmodern socio-cultural development. The uncertainties of the transition period of Croatian society, within the general framework of the processes of globalization, modernization and individualization, are intensified by lack of social consensus on a fundamental system of values and norms. The prevailing state of contemporary Croatian society is that of anomie. The role of religion in Croatian society is characterized by a series of historical and socio-cultural factors and processes. Primarily, in consideration of Croatia’ s geopolitical location, religion was an important factor in the development of national and social identity in the older, as well as recent, history of Croatian society. During warfare connected with the disintegration of the former federation, religion had an important symbolic role. That combined with the difficulties of adjusting to the new social circumstances of the end of social isolation, brought controversy into the relations of society and religion. Successful amalgamation of the religious with the national can also have negative social repercussions in the sense of creating a conservative bloc that may complicate the processes of modernization and democratization of Croatian society, as well as those of joining the European Union. This exposition is based on the results of empirical research (Aufbruch, 1997 ; EVS 1999 ; Modernization And Identity In Croatian Society, 2004). Special emphasis is put on the analysis of the processes of individualization and re-traditionalisation of religion in Croatian society and, in that sense, on comparison with other Eastern and Western European countries.
