Sažetak
The ethnonym Bayash (or Boyash) is used in Croatia and Hungary for the Roma ethnic group speaking a distinct archaic dialect of the Romanian language. The same ethnic group is known under the terms Banyash, Karavlasi or Romanian Gypsy in Serbia, Rudari in Bulgaria and both Rudari and Băeşi in Romania. This semi-nomadic group has arrived to Croatia most likely in the 19th century after the abolition of slavery in Romania and has kept traditional trades until recently. The present pilot study is based on the field work in Eastern Croatia, in six different towns and villages in Baranja where two Bayash subgroups were recruited: speakers of Muntenian and Ardeal dialects. As the exact place of origin and the time of arrival of the Bayash in Croatia are not precisely documented in written historical records or kept in the collective Bayash memory, this study attempts to address the ambiguities regarding the origin, migrational history, admixture as well as inter- and intra- group paternal genetic relatedness of the Bayash in Croatia and the Balkans based on the analysis of the battery of biallelic and eight microsatellite (DYS19, DYS385, DYS389I, DYS389II, DYS390, DYS391, DYS392, DYS393) Y chromosome markers.
