Sažetak
This paper deals primarily with the failed attempt of saint John Capistran to win over the Serbian despot George Branković to embrace the Catholic faith on the eve of the planned crusade against the Ottomans which resulted in the defense of Belgrade in 1456. The episode will be studied through the protagonists' correspondence as well as through contemporary chronicles and Capistran's hagiography. It will be considered in a broader context as an early example of the Catholic-Orthodox dispute in South-Eastern Europe. Through its analysis, I will try to expose the mechanisms of how the representatives of the two confessions distorted the image of their respective antagonists, thus frustrating the communication between the Catholic and the Orthodox side.
