Sažetak
This paper focuses on quality parameters for transmission of multimedia services in UMTS mobile networks. Multimedia services demands high bandwidths and guaranteed bit rates for achieving quality expected from the end users. Current UMTS implementation enables acceptable quality of provided services, circuit switch video call for example, but not with supreme quality expected from the end user. The major problems are limitations of existing WCDMA physical layer. The FDD mode which is widely implemented does not support required quality for transmission of videoconferencing service (2 Mbit/s) or pictures in VHS quality. Constant errors in picture transmission results in freezing pictures. In the IP world, new access technologies are becoming mobile. A WiMAX standard supports mobility within 50 km range and <75 Mbit/s transmission rates which is based on OFDM based physical layer. One of the possible solutions for enabling high quality multimedia services could be interworking between IP based radio networks with UMTS core networks.
