Sažetak
The need of protecting more and more sophisticated and complex structures against dangerous natural events such as earthquakes and windstorms, has led to the development of special technologies. Among them, it is worth mentioning the viscous dampers, whose behaviour is given by their constitutive Force Vs Velocity law. These devices are capable of damping the induced structural oscillations through the dissipation of energy associated with the aforesaid natural events. This paper deals with the characteristics of the damping system applied on the Krka bridge, designed and manufactured by FIP Industriale, which allows for different structural response to normal working conditions and to seismic loads. Special structural bearings with sacrificial restraints (fuses) are used to hold the deck in longitudinal direction up to the predefined value of the horizontal force, obtained as the maximum value for normal working conditions. When this high horizontal limit value of 1.000, 0 kN is overcome in the case of a large earthquake, these fuses break by shear and viscous dampers at the abutments are activated, providing for the seismic energy dissipation.
