Sažetak
Upon approaching the European Union and accepting the European model of agriculture meant that in Croatia the rural areas had to be defined in a manner that would enable comparability with the other countries of the Union. In Croatia, the rural areas are characterized with an expressly low population density. Also, there is a great difference between the between the standards in relation to development, organisation and protection of rural areas in the EU and those in Croatia. Upon gaining independence in 1990, Croatia began the process of adapting domestic agriculture, but also agricultural policy to the new circumstances and towards the strategic orientation of Croatian policy of becoming the member of the EU.
