Sažetak
Skeletonema costatum, already recognized as an eutrophication indicator, is often present abundantly and as a dominant microphytoplankton species in the western eutrophic region of the northern Adriatic Sea. Generally oligotrophic northern Adriatic Sea, in this region is eutrophic due to constant allochthonous fluvial nutrient-rich input. S. costatum occurs in this region mostly in the winter/early spring. However, occasional appearances of S. costatum even in the summer period and in the oligotrophic region are also noticed. Winter occurrences in both eutrophic and oligotrophic region coincide with extremely high N/P ratios (around 100 and 140, respectively), suggesting low phosphorous and high nitrogen demand of the diatom. On the contrary, during summer, N/P ratio is much lower (around 40 and 70), indicating greater demand for phosphorus than in the colder part of the year. Although well adaptable to various salinity and temperature conditions, nutrient limitation of S. costatum is highly dependable on the temperature.
