Sažetak
Malignant pleural mesothelioma is a tumor with bad prognosis, deriving from mesothelial cells of pleura. Occurrence is associated with the exposure to asbestos. It can be a localized or a diffuse tumor which penetrates into lungs and spreads through the whole pleural cavity. It often infiltrates other intrathoracal organs. Fifty patients with malignant mesothelioma diagnosed at our Institute in the period from 1999. to 2005, who were under medical treatment in the Hospital for lung diseases Jordanovac, were studied. The analysis of collected data showed a higher frequency among males with a M:F ratio of 6, 2:1. More than half of the patients suffering from disease were at the age between 50 and 70 and most of them came from the Primorsko– Goranska County. Analysing different professions of the patients, it has been noted that locksmiths and people employed in shipbuilding suffered from mesothelioma on a more frequent basis. Based on anamnesis 22% of the patients were exposed to the asbestos for a longer or shorter period of time, and 50% were long-time smokers. All those who were exposed to asbestos were also smokers. Histologically, the epithelial type of mesothelioma was diagnosed in 86%. Mesotheliomas metastasizing into regional lymph nodes or distant organs were verified in 9 patients (18%). According to our data an increase of patient number could be observed ranging from four cases of malignant mesotheliomas in 1999. to nine cases in 2004. The data of our work could represent the basis for a larger study of mesothelioma.
