Sažetak
The main task of the paper is to determine the extent of influence of FDI inflows on the level of merchandise trade and the trade patterns of 8 transition economies in Central and Eastern Europe. With the help of Granger bi-variate causality test we find that causality runs from FDIs to goods exports and goods imports in Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia. According to the values of the RCA indicator and the GL index, countries that have a distinct comparative advantage in a product group are forerunners in specialization in intra-industry trade. Our empirical results show that FDIs can unequivocally explain for forerunner position of Hungary, Poland and Slovakia, while Slovenia as a forerunner with low level of FDIs represents an outlier. Croatia’ s coincident deterioration in specialization of intra-industry trade and its high level of FDI inflows are not puzzling as those investments were predominantly directed into services.
