Sažetak
We have previously observed that 4-chloroindole-3-acetic acid (4-Cl-IAA) stimulates the growth of Pisum sativum pericarp (pea pods) in situ (Plant Physiol. 99, S-2). IAA and 4-Cl-IAA are naturally occurring auxins in pea fruit. To understand the function of auxin in pea fruit growth we are examining the effect of chemical substitution on auxin activity in the stimulation of pea pericarp growth. IAA, 4-, 5-, 6-, and 7-Cl-IAA were tested for their in situ activity. Exogenous 4-Cl-IAA (pericarp deseeded 2 days after anthesis was treated daily for 5-6 days) enhanced pericarp growth up to 4.6 fold (10^-4 to 10^-6 M) while IAA was ineffective. Silver thiosulfate, an ethylene action antagonist did not enhance IAA's activity. Chlorine substitution at positions 4, 5, 6 or 7 of the indole nucleus stimulated growth compared to the deseeded control, but the 4-substituted Cl-IAA was at least 2 times more active than other chlorinated auxins. The fluorinated IAA series (4-, 5-, 6-, and 7-F-IAA) was less active in stimulating pericarp growth than Cl-IAAs. In general, halogen substituted IAAs were more active than IAA in stimulating pericarp growth with the naturally occurring 4-Cl-IAA of pea being most active. We are currently measuring endogenous levels of 4-Cl-IAA and IAA during early pea fruit development ; further studies will monitor the rate of metabolism of auxins.
