Sažetak
Needs for terminal mobility in wireless IP networks stimulated the development of different handover mechanisms. The Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP) is standardized as a new transport layer protocol in the IP protocol suite and is based on the TCP protocol, but includes a number of advanced features that are not available in TCP. The mobile version of SCTP (mSCTP) implements several mechanisms that make it suitable for usage in environments that require handover capabilities. In this paper we evaluate handover performance of mSCTP in IEEE 802.11 wireless networks. Different usage scenarios are tested and a custom software solution that provides handover administration capabilities is also presented. We obtain the performance of mSCTP by measuring the average handover time for different standardized WLAN bit rates and various network loads. We conclude that mSCTP is suitable for handover realization in IEEE 802.11 because the handover delay measurements are at an acceptable level for the tested usage scenarios.
