Sažetak
The slag material used for wastewater purification in the conducted experiments was by-product of ferromanganese production. Chemically and mineralogically this waste material contains app. 60 % of iron with hematite and magnetite as the predominant components. Activated iron slag (AIS) was used for turbidity removal and heavy metals sorption from different aqueous solutions such as waste water from pressure washing of boats and a solution which contain 1-100 mg/l Cu, Pb and Zn prepared by dissolving nitrate (Cu, Pb) and chloride salts (Zn) in distilled water. The influence of pH value, mixing time and organic mater in the form of EDTA was determined. 1g of AIS sorbed 99.995 mg of Cu, 99.57 mg of Zn and 99.04 mg of Pb from aqueous solution containing 100 mg/l of those metals. Removal of Cu was highly influenced with the presence of organic mater and Zn with the pH changes in the treated solution. The optimum sorption was at pH value between 8 and 9. Removal efficiency of AIS for majority of the elements present in the real waste water was greater than 99 %. All elements in the purified water were significantly lower compared to maximum allowed values.
