Sažetak
We have investigated the following four biochemical parameters in 30 alcohol-dependent patients admitted for hospital treatment at the department for alcoholism: aspartate- aminotransferase (AST), alanin-aminotransferase (ALT), gamma-glutamyl-transferase (GGT) and carbohydrate defficint transferrin (CDT) ; we have monitored their values on the day of admittance, and again on the first, seventh, fourteenth and twentyfirst day. At the admittance, the patients showed increased values of AST compared to normal values in 35 percent of cases (sensitivity 35 percent, specificity 100 percent), for ALT in 15 percent of cases (sensitivity 15 percent, specificity 98 percent), for GGT in 60 percent of cases (sensitivity 60 percent, specificity 93 percent), and for CDT in 85 percent of cases (sensitivity 85 percent, specificity 98 percent). During the three-week abstinence, the values of AST and ALT showed a slight decrease. GGT and CDT showed a considerable decrease, so GGT values were higher than normal in 35 percent of cases, while CDT values were higher than normal in only 15 percent of cases. The values obtained have been processed by means of receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis, which showed that the area below the plot of CDT and GGT were 0.97 percent and 0.94 respectively, while the area below the plot of AST and ALT is considerably smaller and amounts 0.85 and 0.82 respectively. This way, we have confirmed that GGT and CDT are good indicators for monitoring the abstinence and improving the detection of relapses in persons addicted to alcohol.
