Sažetak
The aim of this article is to show that Thomas Aquinas knew some main problems and achievements of today's philosophy of science. The author first summarizes Aquinas' division of the sciences and emphasizes the particular position and characteristics of the "middle sciences", such as mathematical physics. He then carefully analyses three Aquinas' texts (Summa theologiae, pars I, q. 32, a. 1, ad 2 ; In libros de Caelo et Mundo expositio, lib. I, lect. 3 and lib. II, lect. 17), illuminating them with some other Aquinas' explanations and emphasizing their methodological aspect. The author shows that Aquinas knew: (1) that a characteristic of mature empirical science is hypothetico-deductive method, not cumulative induction ; (2) that experience cannot confirm but only falsify a scientific theory (a central idea of Karl Popper's philosophy of science) ; (3) that theory is underdetermined by experience and that experience is not sufficient basis for decision between two competing theories ; (4) that, keeping in mind all previously shown, scientific realism is associated with serious problems.
