Sažetak
The author first outlines history of thomism in the past more than seven centuries as a continuous alteration of periods of prosperity and those of oblivion. He emphasizes that each subsequent period of prosperity was richer than the previous one, the richest being neothomism in the first half of the twentieth century. Then he analyses some aspects of present situation. Many philosophers believe that contemporary twilight of thomism is definitive and the last one. But, in author’ s view, the situation is not so unfavourable. The thought of Aquinas is better known today than ever in the past. Historians of philosophy investigate it all over the world, and many philosophers from all currents and schools of thought utilise some Thomas’ ideas in his own thinking. What is most lacking today is a significant group of systematic thomists. The author firmly believes that a new period of prosperity will come soon. All conditions needed are already present and intrinsic value of thomism must become apparent again. Thomism is the remedy for contemporary philosophy and for many of its weaknesses. It is the most powerfull “ research programme” or “ paradigma” for better and deeper understanding of contemporary world and contemporary man and for finding solutions to contemporary problems. At the end of the paper the author briefly outlines the situation in Croatia which is similar to that in the rest of Europe.
