Sažetak
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a common, heterogeneous age related degenerative dementia of unknown etiology and multifactorial origin. It is characterized by a progressive loss of intellectual function. At present there is no available treatment that can cure, reverse or stop progression of AD. The basic strategies for potentially effective treatment for AD are: compensation of cholinergic deficit, blockade of excitatory amino acid receptor overstimulation, blockade of excessive influx of extracellular Ca2+, decrease of free acids and free radicals accumulation, blockade of beta amyloid deposition and hyperphosphorylation of tau protein, and apoptosis prevention.
