Sažetak
Landfilling has long been the most popular disposal method for both domestic and industrial wastes. Application of molecular markers has proved to be a powerful tool for providing information about sources of the wastes disposed, as well as about transport and transformation processes in and below the landfill. A study conducted on the main landfill of the city of Zagreb comprised determination of a broad spectrum of organic compounds and included GC/MS analyses of solid waste, leachate, soil and groundwater samples. Compounds identified in the landfill can be classified in the two main categories: (1) markers of biological wastes and their microbial transformation (short-chain aliphatic acids, phenols, derivatives of abietic acid, sterols) and (2) markers of anthropogenic wastes (fossil and pyrolytic hydrocarbons, volatile chlorinated hydrocarbons, phthalates, surfactant-derived compounds, pharmaceutical organic compounds). The complex compound assemblages were shown to change dramatically during the transport from the waste to groundwater, reflecting their different biodegradability and physico-chemical properties.
