Sažetak
The paper analyzes the scope and structure of bank loans granted to Croatia’ s households and, based on international comparison, tests the following hypothesis: a) in the last few years banks have strongly increased their lending activities, but these activities have been targeted primarily at the households sector ; b) comparing internationally, the structure of loans given to households is markedly negative, because the loans stimulate the growth of external debt and nonproductive consumption ; and c) due to such behavior of banks, Croatia’ s economy lacks credit support for the restructuring and development, and does not achieve optimal effects in allocation of national savings and in a large part of its foreign debt.
