Sažetak
The yard long bean is an unknown vegetable in Croatia. the main aims of research for its introduction in production were the following: the favourable cultivars, optimum plant density, the kind and height of suppor, the influence of pruning by the lateral shoots on harvest course, labour for harvesting, possibility of storing. As related to the cultivar and cultivation method, the yield of pods amount from 0.92 up to 2.84 kg/m2 in unheated plastic house, with harvesting time of 60 to 80 days and 0.70 to 1.77 kg/m2 in the field, with harvesting time from 55 to 70 days. In relation to the cultivar and place of growth, in the first three weeks of harvest, the yield of 27 up to 55% was obtained. The majority of harvested pods (35 to 41%) was in the category of 30 to 40 cm length. The pruning of lateral shots was not significant, it showed a decrease of yield of 25%. The increase of support height from 1.6 up to 2.0 doubled the yield of pods. There was no remarkable difference in pod yield, either with the plastic net as the support, or with the plastic cord winding wound around each indivindual plant. Depending on the place and growth method, the harvesting of one kilogram of pods required from 14 to 24 minutes. The pods under higher air temperatures are of a low keeping quality. Already after three days of storing in paper bags at the room temperature (of 20 to 25 C), the loss of water amounted from 15 to 20%, and in refrigerator (from 8 to 10 C) 5 to 10%.
