Sažetak
This work provides an overview of the new multimedia and virtual reality multi-user applications, based on Internet protocol (IP) multicasting. The definition of the communication network architecture and reference models has been given and the selection of multimedia and virtual reality applications of interest has been made. MBone (Internet multicast backbone) has been described from the viewpoint of protocols, their standardization and the available software. The selected multimedia conferencing and collaborative work applications, that run over MBone have been presented. Virtual reality applications described include examples of networked multi-user virtual environments. For the selected multimedia and virtual reality applications, the emphasis has been put on the supporting application layer protocols, their basic principles and the state of standardization.
