Sažetak
In this study a questionnaire was designed in order to assess motivators and demotivators in work of elementary school teachers in war affected areas of Croatia. 135 teachers participated in the studz. Four different categories of motivators and demotivators were identified. Motivators included self-fulfilment and achievement, working conditions (including salary), patriotism and doing socially valuable work and peace. (for post-war period). Demotivators comprised social status, unsupportive environment, specific personal problems and lack of support from school authorities. These categories roughly correspond to motivation-hygiene theory proposed by Herzberg. Overall pattern of results shows that teachers rated high both motivators as well as demotivators, although average ratings of motivators are significantly higher. The main difference between teachers' responses for pre-war and post-war period is 'peace' emerging as motivator in post-war period, with highest rating. Apart from 'peace', in post-war period teachers report to be motivated mainly by 'self-fulfilment and achievement' and 'patriotism and socially valuable work' while 'working conditions' (including salary) have the lowest ratings. The same order of motivators was found for pre-war period. When their colleagues are concerned, teachers rate them as less motivated and more affected by demotivators than themselves.
