Sažetak
The city-state of Dubrovnik (Ragusa) situated on the Adriatic coast of the southern part of what is today the Republic of Croatia, achieved its independece from the Venetian dominance in 1358, and soon turned into its competitor, combining the maritime with the lucrative caravan trade in the hinterland. Paradoxically, while on its way to becoming one of the strongest maritime powers, Dubrovnik had to withstand many plague epidemics of which the one in 1527 was the most devastating. Governmental bodies withdrew to the suburbs of the infected city, and physicians, asked for an unpaid leave of absence which they weregranted . Magister Ivan Mednich, medicus chirurgus from the neighboring town of Kotor was accepted for a position of plague doctor or (medicus pestis), since it was then a wellknown fact that he received his training from a qualified surgeon from Venice. The prospect of survival for a plague doctor during the epidemic was very poor. Being a plague doctor was also very unpleasant because it meant being quarantined for the duration of the epidemic and 40 days thereafter. The catastrophic absence of any normal life in the city, was followed by the paucity of sources on Mednich s practice. He is mentioned only in the Libro deli Signori Chazamorbi, the extant manuscript covering the first 30 years of the l6th century, from which it was obviousthat he prescribed medicine for a plague suffering patients, and more often did postmortem examinations. The cooperation with his direct masters the Health Officials seems to have been quite successful, since he was also accepted as salaried surgeon in l528. when the epidemic had diseapered. His choice in the role of a plague doctor was enhanced by his objectives that followed his service in Dubrovnik. Mednich managed to obtain Ragusan citizenship, he enhanced his professional status and by becoming a salaried surgeon his practice acquired a certain permanence. All this leads us to conclude that Ivan Mednich fared quite well in Renaissance Dubrovnik. - tiskano na ruskom
