Sažetak
The implications of our research in Pupićina Cave (northern Istria) are explored by considering the spread of farming in Istria, the Adriatic Basin, and Mediterranean Europe in general. We present a new, two-stage model of the spread of farming along the eastern Adriatic coast in association with the appearance of Early Neolithic (Impressed) and Middle Neolithic (Danilo/Vlaška) pottery. Our model is based on results from recent excavations, new radiocarbon dates, and a thorough review of the existing evidence. The initial stage was a very rapid dispersal, perhaps by “ leapfrog colonization” , associated with cave sites southern Dalmatia. The second stage was a slower agropastoral expansion associated with cave and open-air sites along the eastern Adriatic littoral. In the mountainous hinterland, indigenous groups may have adopted farming through “ individual frontier mobility” .
