Sažetak
In this paper, we consider how the evidence of pottery production, use and discard at Pupićina Cave helps us to unravel the history of activity at that multicomponent prehistoric site. This evidence is used to address several specific issues. Together with radiocarbon dates, pottery provides crucial information for “ phasing” the site – that is, ascribing the post-Mesolithic occupational episodes, “ horizons” , of Pupićina to particular archaeological periods. It also provides the means for assessing the integrity of those horizons. Analysis of the formal stylistic characteristics of the ceramics – shape, size and decoration of the vessels – and a comparison with other sites allow us to situate the Pupićina pottery assemblages within their regional context. Technological dimensions provide data for monitoring patterns of continuity and change in pottery making. Taken together, all these data tell us how pots may have been used at the site during the Neolithic and Bronze Age, and how their function may have changed through time. Included in this chapter is a general discussion of the Istrian Neolithic pottery sequence.
