Sažetak
The effects on glucose, non-esterified fatty acids and insulin are
mediated by BAA , such as clenbuterol . The intensity of these effects
depends on the BAA type, animal species, and especially on the
duration of BAA treatment, i.e. acute or long-term exposure.
Acute effects of therapeutic and growth-promoting doses entail
significant changes in the levels of insulin and glucose in the blood of
calves after the treatment with clenbuterol. However, different results
have been reported after long-term treatment with clenbuterol, e.g., a
slightly decreased insulin level and glucose level similar to that found
in control pigs.
In the present study, subacute treatment with clenbuterol decreased
the serum insulin level in pigs after the treatment, however, all insulin
levels remained within the physiologic range. Thus, the treated pigs
exhibited no glucose response to insulin values.
In conclusion, the results obtained suggested the effects of subacute
treatment of pigs with a growth-promoting dose of clenbuterol on the
observed biochemical parameters to be comparable to those elicited by
long-term clenbuterol treatment, whereby the importance of other
metabolic effects of long-term treatment on nutrient repartition
outweighs the acute effects reported.
