Sažetak
Potable water in the city of Varazdin contains from 15 to 20 mg N/l in the form of nitrate. The maximum allowable concentration (MAC) of nitrate in potable water specified by the lawmaker in Croatia is 10 mg N/l. Varazdin uses underground water which is chlorinated and distributed to end users. In order to better quality to potable water in Varazdin, we propose to use water from the river Drava. For constructing the appropriate treatment procedure for Drava water, we analyze characteristics of the water purification facility in Belisce, (238 km downstream of Varazdin). Water is analyzed at each stage of the purification facility in terms of NH3, NO2 and DOM. Adequate distributions are fitted to almost daily data taken during one year. Characteristics of each stage of the purification facility are extracted. A simple mathematical model is synthesized to represent each purification stage (flocculator, sand filter and charcoal filter). Finally, this enabled simulation of various combinations of filters to achieve satisfactory potable water quality from Drava near Varazdin with minimum cost. Since contrary to water near Belisce, DOM concentration in Drava near Varazdin is low, a sand filter is not needed. It is shown that using only a flocculator and a charcoal filter, water quality will satisfy MAC for the considered parameters.
