Sažetak
Extreme return values of significant wave heights are calculated using the data of the wave height measurements from platforms PANON and LABIN and lighthouse Sv. Ivan operating in the open part of the northern Adriatic Sea for time interval 1978-1992. The approach developed by Goda (1988) is used to fit five candidate probability distributions to an input array of monthly extremes of significant wave heights. Candidate distribution functions are Fisher-Tippett Type I and Weibull with exponents ranging from 0.75 to 2.0. Goodness-of fit information is provided for identifying the distributions which best match the input data. Comparison of the results obtained has shown that extreme return values of significant wave heights obtained using Fisher-Tippett Type I function the best agree with the data of direct instrumental measurements by using waverider DATAWELL. The greatest significant wave heights are to be expected in the winter period, from December to February. Absolute calculated monthly maximum of a significant wave height occurs to be 8.56&plusmn ; 1.43 m for the return period of 100 years from which a maximum wave height is estimated to be about 13.54 m. It is considered a real value having in mind that the maximum measured value on 29 February 1986 was 10.8 m.
