During the monitoring in 1995, on 150 cucurbitacin and 200 yellow sticky plates only specimen of the WCR was caught on the cucurbitacin trap. In 1996 on 200 Hungarian sexual traps, 66 cucurbitacin and 50 yellow sticky traps altogether 788 specimens were caught: 769 or 97, 6% on the Hungarian, 5 on cucurbitacin and 14 on yellow sticky traps. Together with beetles caught in our experiments, 885 WCR beetles were caught in 1996 in Croatia. Prof. R. Metcalf, Univ. of Illinois, suggested to synthesize and use 4-methoxycinnamaldehide. The pharmaceutical industry Pliva, Zagreb, synthesized this compound (“ Pliva” ). 1%, 5% and 10% solutions in acetone were made. Filter paper and cosmetical stripes were dipped for 10 minutes. These strips were given on yellow sticky plates, in capsules and in Hungarian traps. They were exposed together with standards (Hungarian and cucurbitacin traps, and yellow sticky plates) in four most infested localities. On the Hungarian traps 82 WCR were caught, on 1% “ Pliva” on strips mounted on yellow sticky plates 4 beetles , on 10% “ Pliva” on strips in capsules 1, in Hungarian traps 4, and on the yellow sticky plates 3 resp. 2 specimens were found. On all other traps no beetles were caught. This trials confirmed some attractiveness of the 4-methoxycinnamaldehide synthesize by Pliva. On September 12th new traps conteining SLAM and 4-mathoxycinnamaldehie obtained from Dr. L. Chandler where exposed in pairs with the Hungarian sexual traps. As the next day a long lasting period of cold and rainy weather started no results were obtained. Concluding, we can state that the superiority of the Hungarian sexual trap was completely confirmed. This trap should be used in further monitoring actions. In spite of this, due also to its high price, further research aiming to improve the activity of the “ Pliva” bait alone or in mixture, applied by different methods, and of the “ Chandler bait” , will take place in the next years. The final goal of such investigations is not only to find out the best monitoring possibility of the WCR, but also to establish the best use of attracticide-baits for an ecologically and economically sustainable control of this pest.
