Sažetak
Due to the first appearance of the western corn rootworm (WCR) – Diabrotica virgifera virgifera in Europe (in Serbia) near the border of Croatia, it is important to evaluate the consequences of the presence of this pest to the corn production in Croatia. The climatic conditions in Croatia are very similar to those in the regions of the U.S. where this insect is spread. In eastern Croatia the minimal soil temperatures at the 10 cm depth were never lower than – 3, 8°C. In north-west Croatia only rarely in some localities they reaches the critical temperature for overwintering eggs of -8°C. Based on data given by Levine et al. (1992) and soil temperatures (at 10 cm depth) measured on two localities in Croatia we have calculated that the first larvae will hatch between 14.05. and 15.06., in average on 29-30.05. The hatch of 50% larvae will occur between the 25.05. and 25.06., in average on 8-10.06. These data show that insecticides applied at planting should remain biologically active for 6-7 weks. The great share of corn growing in eastern Slavonia and the spread of monoculture of this crop will favour the abundance and damages caused by the WCR in Croatia. As statements about the influence of agrotechnical measures in the U.S. are not definitive we can only suppose that the winter ploughing, which is often practised in this region, will negatively influence the development of this pest. Some indications justify the suspicion that the WCR will behave in Europe in a similar way as some other imported insects and some become an even more nuisible pest than in the native continent – America.
