Sažetak
FAO TCP 6712 (A) was initiated in June 1997 in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Hungary, and Romania against the western corn rootworm (WCR), Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte. WCR field activities included: 1) establishment of a permanent monitoring network ; 2) implementation of a trapping for containtment and control program ; and 3) evaluation of a Slam-based areawide pest management program. In the permanent monitoring network, pheromone traps were placed in 10, 10, 47, and 27 permanent locations in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Hungary, and Romania, respectively. Traps were monitored from July through early October at intervals from weekly to monthly, depending on WCR numbers. The trapping for containment and control activity used pheromone and Multigard yellow sticky traps placed in pairs at 2-4 sites along the leading edge of the infestation in Croatia, Hungary, and Romania. Both trap types were used to ensure the capture of both males and females. When WCR catches were recorded at any location, 12 sets of paired traps were placed at 1 km increments radiating out in 4 directions from the original pair. After each additional catch, more traps were added. This trapping activity was designed to determine if WCR beetles could be removed from an area. In the third field activity, Slam was received too late for areawide management of beetles. In 1998, an area near Mezohegyes was identified as the test site. Approximately 1, 800 ha of seed corn were designated as areawide management fields and 800 ha each of silage corn and sweetcorn were the untreated controls. The efficacy of Slam was monitored in these program fields using pheromone and Multigard traps.
